This was during Revolutionary War Weekend 2017- it was actually my third trip to Mt. Vernon, I have been there four times total, all during the semester I spent in DC that Spring. It was beautiful, every history lover’s dream: the times and people that only seemed to reside in history books all came to life before me as if I had gone back in time. And there he was: George Washington, welcoming us to his home, and telling us about the Revolutionary War from his own perspective. I never fully understood what drew Washington away from public life and back to Mt. Vernon until I stood on the piazza and looked out onto the Potomac. It was so peaceful. I get chills and every time I think about it, I can’t seem to wrap my head around the idea that I set foot in the same place the Washington family called home, in addition to being a place which has been traversed by so many great individuals throughout history.
