We were in Washington DC in the fall of 2013. The government was shut down during most of the trip but Mount Vernon was open since it is privately maintained. We felt we were fortunate to have been there during this time as we might have missed Mount Vernon otherwise and it was a great experience. The estate was incredible but I was taken by the huge pecan tree, which is no longer there. It dwarfed the house, which was quite large. George Washington had a great view! The government opened up the last few days of the trip so we did get to go to some of the museums. Wendy Wolfe, 2013
